Top Wineries Less Than 90 Minutes from Barcelona

Living in Barcelona, one of the things I still can't quite believe is how quickly you can leave the city and be surrounded by vineyards.

In under 90 minutes you can be in the Penedès — one of Catalonia's most important wine regions and the place I keep coming back to when I want a proper wine day without turning it into a full vacation. Close enough for a day trip, meaningful enough to feel like a real escape.

I've always loved wine, but my Belgian partner has seriously raised my game since we met. He knows wine in a way that's made me pay more attention — not just to whether something tastes good, but to how it's made, who's behind it, what the land is doing, and whether a place actually cares about the wine or is just shuffling people through a tourist tasting. That combination of proximity and a more discerning approach is what led to this list.

This is my personal Penedès edit: the wineries I'd recommend if you're based in Barcelona, love wine, and want something a little more thoughtful than the cheapest cava tour with a bus full of people in matching hats.

Why Penedès Is the Easiest Wine Escape from Barcelona

Penedès is one of the best wine regions to visit from Barcelona because it's close, scenic, and full of variety. Around 40 km south of the city, with nearly 300 wineries and a landscape that shifts from flat vineyard plains to hillside estates, the region is especially known for sparkling wine — but don't reduce it to "cava country."

You'll find still whites, reds, rosés, organic and biodynamic producers, family-run estates, and beautiful vineyard landscapes across a range of experiences and budgets. The key, as always, is choosing well.

The Wineries

Parés Baltà — the one I'd send friends to first

Look how lucky we got with these sunset skies while we sipped their delicious wines!

Pacs del Penedès · organic and biodynamic · 1 hour from Barcelona

This is the winery we loved most. We stocked up like we'd never see wine again, because the bottles were genuinely worth bringing home — which is exactly what I want from a winery visit.

A family-owned winery with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1790, Parés Baltà is located just 30 km from the Mediterranean coast and Barcelona, and has maintained organic farming since 2002 and biodynamic practices since 2012. In 2024 the winery was chosen among the 100 Best Vineyards in the World — a recognition awarded by World's Best Vineyards for exceptional wine tourism experiences. WineTourismParesbalta

Visits include walks through the vineyards and the winery, guided tastings of organic wines and cavas, and activities such as chocolate or cheese pairings, or 4×4 routes among the vines. The wine bar requires no booking, though it's advisable. For the full experience, book the guided visit — it runs two to four hours depending on what you choose, and you'll taste five to eight wines. Paresbalta

What sets it apart is that it has the feeling I always look for: beautiful setting, serious wine, warm experience, and enough depth that you don't feel like you're doing something designed only for tourists.

Why go: Organic and biodynamic focus, beautiful vineyard setting, wines worth buying afterwards, polished but not soulless. My top recommendation for a first Penedès visit — or a tenth.

The tip: Leave space in your car or suitcase. You will tell yourself you're "just looking" and leave reorganizing your entire wine situation at home.

Vilarnau — the design-forward cava stop

A man in his true element.

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia · modern architecture · cava and vineyard views

More modern and design-forward than some of the old-school estates, but in a way that still feels tasteful. If Parés Baltà is the one I'd recommend for a deeper wine experience, Vilarnau is the one to add if you want a beautiful cava stop that feels calm, scenic, and genuinely enjoyable.

The winery was inaugurated in 2005, designed with a strong visual identity, and the visit begins with a glass among the vineyards before moving through the vinification areas. Runs Thursday to Sunday, requires booking, around 90 minutes.

Why go: Great for cava lovers, modern and visually appealing, easy to pair with lunch in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, polished without feeling tacky.

The tip: A good one to pair with a second winery if you're making a full Penedès day of it.

Recaredo — for serious sparkling wine lovers

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia · long-aged Corpinnat · biodynamic

This is the one I'd put on the list if you're going with someone who really cares about sparkling wine and wants something less casual. Recaredo focuses on long ageing and biodynamic viticulture, and the visit reflects that — more serious and wine-focused, less "cute afternoon in the sun."

The experience covers the cellar and winery with a focus on long-ageing methodology, followed by a tasting of Corpinnat Brut Nature sparkling wines and Celler Credo whites.

Why go: Strong reputation, serious approach, essential for sparkling wine lovers who want to understand what long ageing actually means in the glass.

The tip: I'd choose this for people who already love wine — not for someone who just wants a pretty afternoon with a glass in the sun.

Gramona — for classic prestige and sparkling wine depth

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia · fifth and sixth generation · Xarel·lo-focused

Another strong option if you want to go deeper into Penedès sparkling wines. Gramona is a fifth- and sixth-generation winemaking family with Xarel·lo at the backbone of their sparkling wines — a grape variety that deserves far more attention than it usually gets.

Visits can be arranged directly with the winery in your preferred language.

Why go: Historic family producer, serious sparkling wine reputation, great for understanding Xarel·lo and why it matters in Penedès.

The tip: Pair with another Sant Sadurní stop for a sparkling-focused day.

Albet i Noya — for organic pioneers and a vineyard wine bar

Muntanyes d'Ordal · organic since 1978 · wine bar terrace

A strong choice if you want a winery with real organic credibility and a more relaxed, less production-style feel. Albet i Noya has been making organic wine since 1978 — long before it was fashionable — and their wine bar terrace overlooking the vineyards is one of the more pleasant places to spend an afternoon in the whole region.

Small-group visits, appointment only, pet-friendly, vegan options, and an EV charging station if you need it.

Why go: Organic pioneer with a genuine ethos, vineyard terrace, thoughtful visit without the big-brand energy.

The tip: The one I'd book for a slower, more natural-feeling vineyard day rather than a big production-style visit.

Can Bas Domini Vinícola — for a quieter estate feel

Penedès · historic estate · appointment only · four-wine tasting with snacks

The option I'd reach for when I want the day to feel calm, grown-up, and uncrowded. Can Bas has a historic estate atmosphere and a guided visit that includes a walk among the vines, a full winery tour, and a tasting of four wines with snacks. Appointment only, available in Spanish, English, French and Catalan.

Why go: Historic estate atmosphere, good for a refined and quieter visit, works well as an alternative to the more obvious cava names.

The tip: This is the winery for people who want a slow, elegant day — not a big crowd or a photo opportunity.

How I'd Plan a Penedès Day from Barcelona

Option 1 — The easy first-timer day Start at Parés Baltà, lunch in or near Vilafranca del Penedès, add Vilarnau in the afternoon. Bring wine home. This is the version I'd recommend to most people.

Option 2 — The serious sparkling wine day Start with Recaredo, add Gramona, lunch in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, keep the afternoon slow. For anyone who really loves cava or traditional-method sparkling.

Option 3 — The organic / slower wine day Start at Albet i Noya, add Can Bas, finish with a sunset drink or dinner nearby. For people who care about sustainability and want a more relaxed day.

Option 4 — The stay-over version Book a wine hotel, do one serious tasting, have a long dinner, wake up in the vines. Honestly the version I'd like to do more often.

Where to Stay

Cava & Hotel Mastinell

The obvious wine-lover splurge — a five-star hotel in the heart of Penedès combining cava and wine culture with a full wine tourism experience. Best for a romantic escape or anyone who doesn't want to drive after tastings.

Mercer Casa Torner i Güell

A boutique hotel in Vilafranca del Penedès — good if you want to stay in town with restaurants, walking, and easy access to different wineries. Easier logistics than a rural stay.

Rural houses and vineyard stays via Penedès Turisme

For groups, families, or anyone who wants something more atmospheric — the regional tourism site lists rural houses, apartments and B&Bs among the vineyards.

One Last Thing

Penedès is one of those places that reminds me why living in Barcelona is such a gift. You can wake up in the city, be tasting wine among vineyards before lunch, stock up on bottles you're genuinely excited to drink at home, and be back before dinner.

Or better: don't go back before dinner. Stay the night, order the good bottle, and let wine country do its thing.
